Dementia Care Unit, The Grange, Littleport, Cambridgeshire
Client: Minster Care Group
Contract Value:  c. £2.8 million
Services: RIBA Stages 0 to 7-Inception through to Completion and Use.
Status: Planning Permission.

This project for a major Care Home operator, sought to expand their existing Nursing Home facility to provide a new 43 bedroom Dementia Care Unit on the site. The design evolved from detailed discussions with the Local Authority to create a building with the appearance of a terrace houses when viewed from Grange Road, to respond to the immediate context. Planning Permission was granted in January 2008, and enacted in 2010 to preserve the consent until such a time that the Client considers the new unit to become viable.

The enactment of the consent required an element of archaeological fieldwork with strip trenches dug both in the area of the new building, where future excavations would take place for foundations, and in the area of a new car park, in order to satisfy pre-commencement planning conditions.
